这首诗写的要么是Samuel Bowles (1878)的死，要么是 Judge Otis Lord (1884)的死。据爱米丽的主要传记作家 Richard Sewall考证，这两个人应该是爱米丽的真爱，当然，他们不是那种传统意义上的爱人。
